Toyota recalls 10,000 electric C-HRs over software glitch

Toyota is recalling roughly 10,000 electric C-HR SUVs in North America due to a software defect that can cause sudden power loss while driving.
Toyota has initiated a safety recall for approximately 10,000 all-electric C-HR vehicles sold in North America. The move addresses a software defect in the regenerative braking system that could lead to a complete loss of drive power under specific conditions. This is the first recall for the model, which launched earlier this year as a sportier, smaller alternative to the company’s larger bZ SUV.
The issue arises when the battery is at or near full charge. In these states, the regenerative braking system can inadvertently overcharge the battery. This malfunction triggers a shutdown of the electric drive system, leaving the vehicle without propulsion while still in motion. Although the car retains steering and basic braking, the loss of drive power poses a significant safety risk, particularly at higher speeds or in traffic.
Software fix required for battery control
The root cause lies in the electronic control unit (ECU) software that manages battery charging levels. According to Electrek, the glitch prevents the system from properly limiting charge intake during regenerative braking when the battery is already full. The remedy involves a software update to the battery ECU, which technicians at authorized Toyota dealerships will install. This update is expected to correct the logic error and prevent the drive system from shutting down unexpectedly.
Owners will receive notification letters in early November 2026. Until then, drivers can check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on Toyota’s website or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration portal to see if their car is affected. The recall currently covers only model-year 2026 vehicles; the newer 2027 models are not included in this specific action.
Potential expansion to global markets
While the current recall is limited to North America, there is a strong possibility it will extend to other regions. The electric C-HR+ sold in Europe, the UK, and other international markets is mechanically identical to the North American C-HR EV. Given the shared hardware and software architecture, regulators and Toyota may apply the same safety fix globally to ensure consistent safety standards across all markets.
The trade-off for consumers is a temporary inconvenience during the repair process, though the fix itself is a non-invasive software update. This incident highlights the growing complexity of electric vehicle software, where interactions between powertrain components and battery management systems require precise calibration. As electric vehicles become more prevalent, such software-based recalls are likely to become a more common part of vehicle maintenance.

Drivers of affected vehicles should remain vigilant and avoid relying solely on regenerative braking at high speeds if they notice any unusual behavior.
