Blizzard aims to set a new standard for character variety in the upcoming action RPG, promising a broader selection of playable archetypes than seen in any previous entry in the series.

Blizzard Entertainment is preparing to release Diablo 5 with the largest starting roster of playable characters in the franchise's history. Game director Joe Shely confirmed this expansion of options during a recent panel at BlizzCon 2026. The studio is targeting nine or ten classes available at launch, a significant increase compared to previous entries.

This strategic shift aims to cater to both long-time fans and new players by offering a wider array of combat styles. By including familiar archetypes alongside novel concepts, the developers hope to create a more inclusive entry point. The announcement follows the game's surprise reveal and the confirmation of its Spring 2029 release window.

Familiar Faces and New Archetypes

Three of the launch classes have already been identified: the Monk, the Demon Hunter, and the newly introduced Plague Knight. Shely explained that returning classes like the Demon Hunter will retain core mechanics, such as twin crossbows, to satisfy nostalgia. However, each character will feature a fresh representation and updated abilities to ensure the experience feels distinct from earlier games.

The inclusion of the Plague Knight signals a willingness to experiment beyond traditional fantasy roles. This approach allows players who started with Diablo 3 to find a familiar comfort in known characters while exploring entirely new gameplay dynamics. The variety is designed to make the initial playthrough feel both recognizable and innovative.

Strategic Shift in Franchise Development

As development on Diablo 5 reaches full swing, Blizzard has clarified the future of its current title, Diablo 4. The studio confirmed that the game will not receive any new expansions. Instead, the focus will remain on seasonal updates, with the next chapter, Season of Hell’s Legacy, launching on September 15.

This decision reflects a broader resource allocation strategy, prioritizing the ambitious scope of the next installment. While Diablo 4 players will continue to receive new content, the major narrative and mechanical expansions are being reserved for the upcoming title. This ensures that the team can fully commit to the expanded class roster and new features planned for Diablo 5.

Nostalgia Meets Modern Design

The emphasis on a large class roster serves a specific design purpose. Shely noted that having many options allows the team to honor the legacy of the series while pushing boundaries. Players can engage with characters they love in a modern context, where the core identity remains intact but the execution is refined.

According to GameSpot, this balance between familiarity and novelty is central to the game's appeal. By paying off the nostalgia of previous entries, Blizzard aims to lower the barrier to entry for veterans. At the same time, the introduction of new classes ensures that the gameplay remains fresh for the current generation of players.
