Ralph Fulton, co-founder of Playground Games, has described the development of the upcoming Fable RPG as a uniquely profound experience for the studio. Speaking to The Guardian, Fulton stated that working on the title has made him think about video games more deeply than any other project. He expressed confidence that this intensive focus on design will translate into a similarly impactful experience for players.
The long-dormant franchise, originally created by Lionhead Games before its 2016 shutdown, is finally returning under the direction of the team behind Forza Horizon. Microsoft announced the reboot in 2020, and the game is now scheduled for release on February 23, 2027. This marks a significant pivot for Playground Games, which has primarily focused on open-world racing titles.
Designing choices with personal stakes
Fulton explained that the studio relentlessly pursued quality, aiming to capture the spirit of the original series. The game culminates in a specific choice that challenges players to reflect on their identity. This decision carries a real personal cost that must be weighed against the potential outcome, a mechanic Fulton believes resonates on a deeper level than typical gameplay loops.
Studio pride in genre shift
Taking on Fable represented a departure from Playground Games' usual output, yet Fulton noted a sense of pride in proving the team could succeed in a different genre. When Microsoft proposed the project, other opportunities seemed to fade into the background. The team was fully committed to the idea, viewing it as a unique chance to define their capabilities beyond racing simulations.
Delayed release and competitive landscape
The game was originally slated for a fall release but was pushed back to 2027. During an interview with IGN India at Gamescom 2026, Fulton revealed the studio had initially targeted October 2026. He expressed a willingness to compete directly with other major titles launching around the same time, indicating confidence in the final product despite the delay.
