Final Fantasy 7 Revelation expands open world scale

Square Enix’s upcoming entry in the remake trilogy promises a seamless transition between airship travel and ground combat, aiming to balance familiar nostalgia with fresh mechanical depth.
Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will feature a significantly larger world than its predecessor, Rebirth. According to director Naoki Hamaguchi, the game aims to deliver at least the same amount of content, if not more, while maintaining a sense of intimacy with the original 1997 title. The development team is focused on creating a seamless experience where players can fly the Highwind airship directly to new regions without relying on traditional cutscene transitions.
The core design philosophy revolves around a vertical exploration system. Players will pilot the airship to specific locations and then descend via parachute to engage in combat and exploration. This mechanic is intended to emphasize the scale of the world, creating a sense of grandeur that was noted as overwhelming during preview sessions. The approach marks a distinct shift from the more linear, story-driven pacing of previous entries in the trilogy.
Balancing nostalgia with new mechanics
Hamaguchi explained that every element in the game is designed to feel both familiar and new. This dual approach requires significant input from the original creators of Final Fantasy 7 to ensure that major changes respect the source material. The goal is to maintain player interest by altering enough to feel fresh, while keeping the core locations and characters recognizable to long-time fans.
The preview highlighted a shift in character focus, with Yuffie Kisaragi taking a prominent role in Chapter 4. Her segment involves traveling to her homeland, Wutai, and engaging in combat that emphasizes her unique abilities. This change in roster availability suggests a broader narrative scope that allows secondary characters to shine, potentially addressing previous criticisms about character utilization in the remake series.
The trade-off of expansive content
While the increased content volume is a selling point, it introduces a potential risk of player fatigue. Hamaguchi acknowledged that some players found the sheer amount of material in Rebirth overwhelming. He believes that this depth is a key part of the game's appeal, but the addition of open-world-like exploration and vertical movement may exacerbate the feeling of choice paralysis for some audiences.
The seamless transition between flight and ground combat, described as an intentional inspiration from other titles, aims to mitigate this by making exploration feel dynamic rather than tedious. However, the reliance on fast travel and parachute descents requires a careful balance to ensure that the scale does not overshadow the narrative momentum. The final release, scheduled for April 8, 2027, will be the first true test of whether this expanded scope enhances or dilutes the core experience.
Upcoming release and platform availability
Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is set to launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2027. The game is developed by Square Enix Creative Studio 1. According to reporting from GN technics/gaming (en-US), the title represents a significant technical and design leap for the series, leveraging modern hardware to support its expansive open-world elements and high-fidelity graphics.
Players can expect a release that pushes the boundaries of what the Final Fantasy franchise has traditionally offered, combining the linear storytelling of the original with the freedom of modern action RPGs. The inclusion of new platforms, particularly the Nintendo Switch 2, suggests a broad accessibility goal, though the performance implications of such a large game on hybrid hardware remain to be seen. The upcoming title promises to be a definitive entry in the remake trilogy, balancing the weight of legacy with the ambition of innovation.
