NEOGEO AES+ Launch Pushed to September 2027 Amid Supply Issues
A highly anticipated retro console rerelease has been delayed by ten months due to component shortages, pushing the launch date to September 2027.
The long-awaited NEOGEO AES+ console is no longer arriving in late 2026. Manufacturer PLAION has officially pushed the global launch back to September 16, 2027, a delay of roughly ten months from the original target.
The company cites global component supply constraints and higher-than-expected demand as the primary reasons for the shift. Rather than releasing a limited batch, they are extending the timeline to secure enough parts for a full-scale launch.
Supply Chain Issues Force Delay
According to an update posted by PLAION Americas, the core issue is the inability to manufacture sufficient units to meet worldwide demand. The company stated that component availability is currently too low to support a standard release window.
By taking the extra time, the manufacturer aims to expand production capacity and ensure that the hardware is widely available at launch. This approach prioritizes customer access over meeting an arbitrary date, though it does mean waiting longer for the device.
Hardware Uses Original Chip Design
Unlike many modern retro devices that rely on software emulation, the NEOGEO AES+ uses re-engineered legacy ASIC chips. This hardware-based approach is designed to replicate the original system’s performance more accurately.
The console supports both original and new cartridges, allowing players to run classic titles without the potential compatibility issues often associated with emulation. This focus on authentic hardware performance is a key selling point for enthusiasts.
Pre-Orders Remain Secure
Existing pre-orders are unaffected by the delay and will still be honored. The standard model remains priced at $249.99, with no price increase announced for the hardware.
An Anniversary Edition is also available for $349.99, which includes an exclusive white Metal Slug cartridge. As reported by GN technics/gaming, the delay is a significant setback for fans who were eager to celebrate the console’s 35th anniversary earlier this year.
