Retroid has introduced the Pocket Duo, a handheld gaming device that returns to the clamshell form factor popularized by the Nintendo DS and 3DS. Rather than attempting to simulate a single large display, the device embraces two distinct screens to recreate the tactile and visual experience of classic dual-screen gaming. This approach targets enthusiasts who prefer the dedicated layout of older hardware over the increasingly uniform single-screen designs of modern competitors.
According to reporting from GN technics/gaming, the device features a 5.5-inch top display and a 4.5-inch bottom screen, both utilizing OLED technology for deep blacks and vibrant colors. Both panels run at a 120Hz refresh rate, which ensures smooth motion in fast-paced games. The hardware is powered by a Qualcomm Dragonwing Q-7790 chip, derived from the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, providing sufficient processing power for emulating 3DS titles at high resolutions and DS games with low latency.
Hardware design prioritizes tactile control
The physical build focuses on ergonomics, weighing 350 grams with an 180-degree free-stop hinge that allows the device to stand open at various angles. The controls include symmetrically placed thumbsticks and tactile ABXY buttons, which are designed to feel familiar to players of traditional handhelds. This model reduces costs by switching the primary display to a 60Hz IPS LCD and slightly reducing the size of the lower screen. It runs on a less powerful Qualcomm processor and Android 15, but it retains key features such as the dual-screen layout, active cooling, and the same battery capacity. This version is aimed at casual gamers who want the unique dual-screen experience without the premium price tag.
Pricing reflects niche market position
The standard Pocket Duo is priced at $250 for pre-orders, rising to $270 at retail, while the Lite starts at $135. These prices position the devices as premium niche products rather than mass-market items. The trade-off for this specialized hardware is a lack of an official launch date, meaning buyers must wait for wider availability. Despite the higher cost compared to generic Android handhelds, the combination of OLED screens and dedicated dual-screen emulation performance offers a unique value proposition for retro gaming fans.
