Roblox Expands to Browsers and Offline Play

Roblox is removing platform barriers by launching browser-based access, offline modes, and new 2D game tools at its 20th-anniversary developer conference.
Roblox has announced a series of updates aimed at making its platform more accessible and versatile. The company, which celebrated its 20th anniversary at the recent Roblox Developers Conference, highlighted the growing scale of its user base. In the last quarter alone, players spent 29 billion hours on the platform across more than 180 countries. These figures underscore the platform's integration into global culture, similar to traditional media forms.
The core of the announcement focuses on three areas: expanding where people can play, improving how creators build, and enhancing player discovery. By enabling games to run in web browsers and offline, Roblox seeks to lower the entry barrier for new users. This approach also allows creators to reach audiences on devices they already own, rather than requiring a specific app installation.
Browser and Offline Access
Starting later this year, players will be able to join Roblox games directly through the Chrome web browser. This feature removes the need to download an app, allowing users to start playing instantly from links shared on social media or in emails. More browsers are expected to support this functionality in the future. According to GN technics/gaming, this move is designed to streamline the onboarding process for casual players who may not want to install additional software.
In addition to web access, Roblox is introducing offline solo play for certain games. This feature, scheduled for early access soon and full release by mid-2027, will allow players to continue their progress without an internet connection. This is particularly useful for commuters or travelers with spotty connectivity. Creators will have the option to enable this mode alongside their existing multiplayer features, providing a more flexible gaming experience.
New Tools for 2D Games
Roblox has historically been dominated by 3D multiplayer experiences, but the company is now expanding its engine to better support 2D and puzzle-based games. New features include an orthographic camera, animated image containers, and direct sprite-sheet import. These tools are designed to help creators build quick, easy-to-play games that appeal to a broader audience. The platform is also improving its user interface with new visual effects like blur and text shadows.
For asynchronous multiplayer games, a new notification system will alert players when it is their turn to move. This feature is arriving in the Studio Beta in October and is expected to launch fully by the end of the year. This update aims to support turn-based strategies, a genre that was previously difficult to implement effectively on the platform. By broadening the types of games that can be built, Roblox hopes to attract creators who prefer simpler, more accessible game designs.
Enhanced Social Connectivity
Roblox is also updating its social features to keep players connected between different games. A new Friends chat tab will allow users to coordinate with their friends and move into new games together without losing the conversation context. Additionally, a voice typing feature is now available, allowing players to speak their messages rather than typing them. Later this year, creators will be able to add pre-set Quick Words to their games, which are proactively reviewed for policy compliance to ensure a safe environment for all ages.
