Tarkov Dev Launches Publisher for High-Risk Indie Projects

Battlestate Games is using its Tarkov audience to support niche titles, prioritizing experimental concepts over guaranteed financial returns.
Key points
- Battlestate Games launched a publishing arm to support hardcore and niche indie projects.
- The studio prioritizes risky, high-concept ideas over guaranteed financial returns.
- Over 100 pitches were received, with five to ten currently deemed suitable for support.
Battlestate Games, the studio behind the intense survival shooter Escape from Tarkov, has launched a new publishing division focused on supporting independent developers. The initiative aims to provide a platform for projects that are considered commercially risky or too niche for mainstream publishers to pick up. According to COO Nikita Buyanov, the goal is not to replicate a traditional publishing model but to create a specialized hub for hardcore gaming communities.
The company explicitly stated that this venture is not intended to become a massive commercial enterprise. Instead, it functions as a supportive resource for small studios working on difficult or unconventional ideas. By leveraging the existing fanbase established by Tarkov, Battlestate Games hopes to help these smaller titles gain visibility and find their specific audience within the broader gaming landscape.
Prioritizing experimental ideas over profit
Buyanov emphasized that the selection process values creative ambition and potential impact over immediate financial security. The studio is looking for prototypes and concepts that possess a unique quality, even if the execution is still in early stages. This approach contrasts with standard industry practices where financial forecasts often dictate which projects receive funding and support.
The trade-off for developers is that they must align with a specific aesthetic and mechanical philosophy. The publisher is not offering broad, general support but is instead curating a specific type of experience. This creates a high bar for entry, as the games must fit comfortably within the 'hardcore' niche that Battlestate Games currently dominates.
Early interest from indie developers
Since the announcement in early September, the new arm has received over 100 pitches from various studios. Out of this volume, the team has identified between five and ten projects that currently match their criteria. However, the internal team is still refining the specific support structures they will offer, meaning the final terms of collaboration are not yet fully defined.
As reported by Game Developer, this move places Battlestate Games in the company of other major studios that have recently launched publishing labels. While some competitors use their success to act as full-service publishers with significant financial backing, Battlestate is positioning itself as a more modest, experimental entity. This distinction suggests a cautious approach to scaling their operations.
Challenges of a new publishing model
The primary risk for the studio is that its existing audience may not be interested in every type of niche project. While the Tarkov community is loyal, it is also very specific in its preferences. If the selected games do not resonate with this core base, the publisher may struggle to generate the necessary traction to validate the model.
Additionally, the team admits that managing a publishing arm is a new experience for them. There is no guarantee that their internal processes will scale effectively to support external developers. This uncertainty adds a layer of operational risk, as the studio must balance its core development duties with the new administrative responsibilities of a publisher.
