Two Xbox games are free for all owners this weekend
Xbox is offering two titles for free to all console owners, bypassing the usual subscription requirement for this specific window.
Xbox has opened its weekly FreePlayDays window with a rare exception to its usual rules. While most free trials require an active subscription, two of this weekend's titles are accessible to any user with an Xbox Series X, Series S, or Xbox One console. No monthly fee or Game Pass membership is needed to download and play these specific games.
The two open-access titles are Dustborn and Madden NFL 27. This offer runs until the end of the day on Sunday, September 13. After that date, access reverts to the standard model where playing these games typically requires a paid subscription or a full purchase.
Two titles bypass subscription barriers
Dustborn, a narrative-driven action-adventure from Quantic Dream, is available for a limited trial. The game is known for its stylized art and heavy focus on story, similar to the developer's previous works. The catch is that the free version is capped at two hours of playtime. If you enjoy the experience, the full version is currently heavily discounted, but the free access does not include the complete campaign.
Madden NFL 27 is the second title, and it offers a different value proposition. Unlike Dustborn, the free access to this American football simulation is not time-limited within the trial window. You can play the full game without a time cap, provided you are within the September 13 deadline. This allows for a more thorough evaluation of the new dynamic Franchise mode and updated controls.
Subscription holders gain extra options
If you already subscribe to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, or Essential, the weekend lineup is larger. According to reporting by GN technics/gaming, four additional titles are included for subscribers. These include Borderlands 4, F1 25 2026 Edition, Surviving Mars: Relaunched, and CarX Drift Racing Online.
For subscribers, these four games are also free to play during this window. The F1 25 2026 Edition patch, in particular, is noted for updating the racing simulation with the latest team liveries and rule changes. However, these four titles remain locked out for anyone without an active subscription, creating a tiered experience based on payment status.
Strict deadline applies to all
The primary trade-off for all users is the strict end date. All six games, whether free for everyone or exclusive to subscribers, become unavailable after Sunday, September 13. This is a hard stop; there is no grace period or extension. If you do not download and play before the deadline, you will lose access until the games are potentially offered again in the future or you purchase them outright.
