Valheim players unlock new resource by breaking troll statues

Defeating the Gammeltroll in Valheim’s Deep North leaves a massive stone statue behind. Breaking it requires a specific crafting chain and yields a heavy resource that changes how you manage your inventory.
In the final biome of Valheim, the Deep North, players encounter the Gammeltroll, a thirty-foot stone giant. Unlike other bosses, this creature does not drop items or collapse into rubble when defeated. Instead, it freezes into a permanent statue known as the Petrified Gammeltroll. This statue blocks the path and appears indestructible to standard mining tools, creating a puzzle that stalls progress for many players seeking new materials.
According to reporting from GN technics/gaming (en-US), the solution involves a cross-biome crafting recipe. You cannot simply hit the statue with a pickaxe. Instead, you must create explosive items called Ember Charges. This process requires resources from the previous Ashlands biome and specific prey from the Deep North, linking the two areas in a way that forces players to manage their progression carefully.
Crafting the key explosive item
The first step is building an Eternal Pyre at your base. This structure requires the Fader Relic, which you obtain by defeating the Ashlands boss, Fader. Once built, the pyre generates embers that you must collect manually. These embers are one of the two core ingredients for the necessary explosive.
The second ingredient comes from hunting adult seals in the Deep North. You must harvest seal pelts from these creatures. At your workbench, combine one ember with two seal pelts to craft a bundle of ten Ember Charges. This step is the bottleneck for many players, as it requires balancing combat with the troll against the time needed to hunt seals and craft the charges.
Breaking the stone giant
To destroy the statue, equip your Ember Charges and throw them at the troll’s ankles. It is safest to throw them from close range and immediately retreat to avoid the explosion. Two charges, one for each ankle, will shatter the statue into a pile of rubble. Using these charges on the live troll is inefficient; they deal damage but are better reserved for breaking the stone form.
Handling the heavy drop
Once the statue breaks, you can collect Petrified Tissue. This resource is extremely heavy, significantly limiting how much you can carry in your inventory. A major catch is that Petrified Tissue cannot pass through wooden portals. You must use stone portals to transport it back to your base. This restriction forces players to ensure their portal infrastructure is upgraded before attempting to farm this resource, adding a layer of logistical planning to the gameplay.
