A record-breaking start for the new military shooter is overshadowed by long wait times and technical hiccups for early adopters.

The military shooter Wardogs has entered early access on Steam with a massive surge of players, reaching a peak of 300,000 concurrent users almost immediately. This sudden influx has placed significant strain on the game's infrastructure, resulting in severe wait times for those eager to jump into the action.

Despite the technical challenges, the title has climbed to the top of Steam's best-seller list. The developer, Bulkhead, had previously advised caution regarding the release, yet the community response has been overwhelming, creating a paradox of high demand meeting limited server capacity.

Server capacity struggles under load

As reported by GameSpot, the immediate popularity of the game triggered a queue system that became a focal point of player frustration. Many users found themselves stuck behind hundreds of thousands of other players, with some reporting wait positions exceeding 300,000. This backlog has turned the launch experience into a test of patience rather than gameplay for many.

Bulkhead attributed part of the issue to rate limits imposed by the platform provider, noting that their setup was not initially scaled for the volume of traffic typical of larger titles. The developer stated they are working to increase these limits to match the scale of the user base, aiming to alleviate the bottleneck.

To manage the situation, the team implemented a controlled batch entry system. While this allows some players to access the game, it means that others must continue waiting in long lines. The lack of a specific timeline for full resolution has added to the uncertainty surrounding the launch window.

Technical fixes and user errors

A recent hotfix aimed to address the ongoing server issues, including problems with joining matches and players being unexpectedly kicked. However, the update process required users to close the game, which often meant re-entering the queue. This cycle of waiting and restarting has further complicated the experience for those trying to play.

Beyond the queues, some players reported being banned without clear cause. Bulkhead acknowledged these incorrect bans and stated they are actively working to resolve them. The developer emphasized that they are monitoring the situation closely and are working through the night to stabilize the servers.

Future plans and console release

Wardogs features large-scale combat with 100 players divided into three teams across a fictional Eastern European setting. The game’s ambitious scope is evident in its design, but the launch-day performance highlights the risks of releasing a large-scale multiplayer title in early access.

Looking ahead, Bulkhead has announced that the console version for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is planned for 2028. For now, PC players must navigate the current technical hurdles, with the hope that server stability will improve as the developer scales their infrastructure.
