Modder Recreates Unreleased RTX 3070 Ti 16GB Card

A Brazilian modder has successfully built a working prototype of the RTX 3070 Ti with 16GB of VRAM, a configuration that never reached retail shelves. By combining components from different Nvidia cards, the creator bypassed the original 8GB memory limit.
Years ago, database leaks hinted that Nvidia intended to release a high-memory version of the RTX 3070 Ti, but the company ultimately shipped only the 8GB model. Now, a Brazilian YouTuber known as fmklab has made that unreleased hardware a reality. The project involves a complex hardware modification that merges parts from an RTX 3070 and a 3070 Ti to create a unique 16GB graphics card.
The build was necessary because the standard 3070 Ti uses GDDR6X memory, which is significantly more expensive and harder to source in the quantities needed for a 16GB upgrade. By using the GDDR6-based RTX 3070 board as a base, the modder could affordably double the memory capacity. This approach allowed for a functional prototype that mirrors the specifications of the rumored card that never made it to market.
Soldering the Memory Straps
Simply replacing the memory chips was not enough for the card to function correctly. When the modified board first booted, diagnostic tools only recognized half of the installed memory. This issue stemmed from the memory straps on the printed circuit board, which dictate how the GPU communicates with the VRAM modules.
The modder used Nvidia’s BIOS Reader tool to identify the specific settings required to enable the full capacity. After carefully reconfiguring these straps through soldering, the card successfully recognized all 16GB. This physical modification ensures the hardware operates stably, allowing the GPU to utilize the entire memory pool without errors.
Performance Trade-Offs and Benchmarks
Testing confirmed that the card can handle workloads requiring more than 8GB of video memory. In one test, a local large language model utilized nearly the entire 16GB pool. Gaming tests with Call of Duty: Warzone also showed the card consuming over 13GB of VRAM without crashing. These results prove that the memory expansion is functional and stable under heavy load.
However, the modification comes with a significant performance penalty. Because the card uses GDDR6 instead of the faster GDDR6X found on stock 3070 Ti models, memory bandwidth is reduced. Benchmark results from Unigine Superposition were lower than typical retail units, indicating that the lower speed of the memory chips offsets the benefit of having more of them.
Practical Value for Buyers
While this is likely the only working example of this specific configuration in the world, it does not represent a viable purchase option for most gamers. The RTX 3070 Ti is an older generation card that is outperformed by current Blackwell models, even those with less memory. For users needing high VRAM, newer options like the RTX 5060 Ti offer better efficiency, features, and warranty support.
Tom's Hardware notes that this project serves as a fascinating technical achievement rather than a practical product recommendation. It highlights the diminishing returns of modifying older hardware when newer, more efficient alternatives are available. The experiment remains a testament to the capabilities of skilled modders, but it is not a path most consumers should follow for their gaming rigs.
