Android Update Simplifies Password Manager Switching

A new Android feature allows users to transfer passkeys and passwords between apps directly, eliminating the need for insecure file exports and reducing vendor lock-in concerns.
Switching password managers on Android has historically been a tedious and risky process. Users were often forced to export their data into unencrypted text files, leaving sensitive credentials exposed on their devices. Passkeys, a more secure alternative to traditional passwords, were essentially stuck in one app, requiring users to manually recreate them across every website and service they used.
Google is addressing these friction points with a new direct transfer system. This update allows users to move both passwords and passkeys seamlessly between compatible applications. The change removes the dangerous step of handling raw data files and addresses a major barrier to adopting more secure authentication methods by reducing the fear of being locked into a single provider.
Direct Transfer Eliminates Insecure Files
The new process hands the heavy lifting to the Android operating system itself. When a user initiates a transfer in their new password manager, Android identifies other compatible apps installed on the phone. It then coordinates the movement of credentials directly between the two applications. This means your data never needs to be written to a local file or shared through an unsecured channel.
According to reporting from Android Central, this approach significantly improves security during the migration phase. Previously, the exported file sat unprotected on the device, creating a window of vulnerability. Now, the transfer happens in the background with user authorization, ensuring that credentials remain encrypted and secure throughout the entire process. The experience is designed to be quick, taking only seconds to complete once approved.
Reducing Vendor Lock-In Concerns
One of the biggest hurdles to passkey adoption was the fear of vendor lock-in. If you switched managers, you often lost access to your passkeys, forcing a painful manual reset. By making these credentials portable, Android removes that penalty. This encourages users to choose managers based on features and security rather than being trapped by the difficulty of leaving.
Data from Bitwarden indicates that passkey creation has surged, with a peak of over 500% growth compared to early 2024. Nearly half of all new passkeys were created in the last three months alone. This trend suggests that as switching becomes easier, more users are likely to embrace passkeys as their primary authentication method, further reducing reliance on vulnerable passwords.
Compatibility and System Requirements
The feature is currently supported by major players including Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane. However, there are specific requirements to ensure the transfer works correctly. Dashlane notes that its service requires Android 10 or newer with the latest Play Services update. Bitwarden is stricter, demanding Android 14 or later with Play Services version 26.21 or higher.
Google states that more partners are expected to join this ecosystem in the future. For now, users should check their specific app’s documentation to confirm compatibility. If you have been hesitant to change password managers due to the hassle of migration, the technical barriers have largely been removed. The trade-off is a slight dependency on specific OS versions and app updates, but the security benefits of avoiding file exports are significant.
