Apple iPhone 18 Pro Review Begins with Modest Hardware Upgrades

The new flagship arrives with a slightly larger battery and a variable aperture camera, but the design remains largely the same as the previous generation.
GSMArena has begun its review of the Apple iPhone 18 Pro, marking the start of coverage for the company's latest flagship lineup. While the foldable iPhone Duo has captured much of the public attention this year, the standard Pro models continue to be the primary focus for many buyers. The review team is testing the Glacier color variant, which joins the new Burgundy, Black, and Silver options for the first time in this generation.
The physical changes to the device are minimal. The most noticeable difference is a slightly smaller Dynamic Island, which now has the capacity to display three live activities simultaneously instead of two. Apart from this subtle adjustment to the screen cutout, the build quality and overall design remain identical to the outgoing iPhone 17 Pro series.
Chipset and battery improvements are subtle
Internally, the iPhone 18 Pro is powered by the new Apple A20 Pro chip. This processor introduces a new GPU core and a second neural engine dedicated to artificial intelligence tasks. Apple also claims that an improved passive cooling system will help manage heat better than before, which is a common concern for high-performance mobile devices.
Battery capacity has seen a modest increase. The model with a physical nanoSIM slot now holds 4,056 mAh, while the eSIM-only version offers 4,288 mAh. This is a slight bump from the previous generation's 3,998 mAh and 4,252 mAh capacities respectively. Given the small difference in milliamperes, the real-world impact on battery life will likely depend heavily on how efficiently the new A20 Pro chip manages power consumption.
Camera aperture adjustment remains uncertain
The camera system retains the same 48-megapixel triple lens setup, including a 5x telephoto unit. However, the main camera now features a variable aperture that can adjust between f/1.5 and f/4.0. This allows for more flexibility in lighting conditions, though it is not a new technology in the smartphone industry.
Reviewers express some doubt about how significantly this variable aperture will improve photo quality in daily use. Since other manufacturers have offered this feature for several years, the test will focus on whether Apple's implementation provides a tangible benefit over fixed-aperture competitors. The full assessment will reveal if these incremental updates justify the cost of the new device.
