This additive approach effectively smooths out irregularities that would otherwise cause friction and uneven stress during the folding motion.
This level of customization represents a significant departure from mass-production norms, where components are typically swapped into pre-existing frames. By tailoring the hinge's interface for each specific device, Apple hopes to mitigate the degradation that causes many foldables to feel loose or develop gaps after months of use.
