AppleCare One adds a $50 monthly family tier
Apple has launched a new insurance tier that covers devices for up to six people. The plan costs $50 per month and includes theft, loss, and accidental damage coverage.
Apple has introduced a new subscription tier for its AppleCare One service, specifically designed for households with multiple users. Announced alongside the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18, this new Family plan costs $50 per month and extends protection to all eligible devices owned by up to six members of a shared family group.
This move expands the company’s insurance offerings beyond individual plans. While existing options cover one or three devices per subscriber, the new tier consolidates coverage for a whole household under a single monthly fee, provided the devices are linked to the family’s Apple ID ecosystem.
Coverage limits and claim caps
The plan covers most Apple products that are less than four years old. Members can include previously purchased devices, and any new product linked to the family Apple ID is automatically enrolled. However, there is a strict limit on theft and loss claims. The family tier allows for only six such claims per year, which equates to one per member if the group is full.
This cap is lower than what individual subscribers might expect. The standard AppleCare+ plan allows two claims per device, while the individual AppleCare One tier permits three. For families with high-risk usage, this shared limit could be a significant trade-off compared to buying separate individual policies.
Included repairs and benefits
Beyond theft and loss, the family plan includes standard AppleCare+ benefits. These cover accidental damage, such as cracked screens or broken back glass, as well as no-cost battery replacements. Engadget notes that this bundle aims to simplify the maintenance process for households that rely heavily on multiple Apple devices for daily tasks.
Requirements for enrollment
To activate this service, users must first establish a Family Sharing group. This requires navigating to the Apple ID settings on an Apple device and inviting up to five additional members. Once the group is active, the subscription can be started through the AppleCare and Warranty section in the device settings.
