Chinese Firms Push Foldable Tech Ahead of Apple

Huawei and Xiaomi have launched new foldable smartphones that prioritize unique designs and in-house chips. These releases position them ahead of global rivals in the current market shift.
Huawei and Xiaomi have moved to the forefront of the smartphone market by unveiling their latest foldable devices. According to a report from GN technics/mobile (en-US), these two manufacturers are leading the evolution of mobile technology. They have introduced hardware that emphasizes distinct physical forms and integrated artificial intelligence features.
The new releases arrived on September 7, marking a significant step for both companies. Unlike competitors who are still experimenting with new shapes, these firms have deployed products with specific design philosophies. Both devices rely on self-developed processors, reducing dependence on external suppliers and allowing for deeper system integration.
Distinct designs define the new devices
The Huawei Mate XT 2 introduces a tri-folding mechanism that creates a U-shape when open. It includes a cover screen and a privacy display feature that limits visibility to the user. This design aims to provide a tablet-like experience in a more compact package, though the complex hinge structure increases mechanical complexity.
The Xiaomi 18 Fold takes a different approach with a wide-format dual-fold design. It features a prominent camera module and prioritizes a larger inner display for media consumption. This model is the most expensive phone from Xiaomi to date, reflecting the high costs associated with its custom hardware and memory components.
In-house chips drive performance gains
Both companies have embedded their own mobile processors into these devices. The Huawei model uses a new 5G chipset that represents a breakthrough in their internal chip development efforts. By controlling the silicon, Huawei can optimize the operating system and hardware working together more efficiently.
Xiaomi’s device runs on a custom chip paired with high-speed memory. The development of this hardware took twenty months, highlighting the time and resources required for such projects. The trade-off for this independence is a higher price point, as the company must absorb the costs of research and manufacturing.
AI features create a competitive edge
The reports note that these phones offer advanced AI capabilities that are currently outpacing some global competitors. Huawei integrates multiple AI agents for tasks like photo editing and voice commands. This local processing allows for faster responses and better privacy, as data does not always need to travel to external servers.
Xiaomi utilizes its own voice assistant to drive similar functions. Meanwhile, Apple continues to face challenges in rolling out its AI features in the Chinese market. This regulatory and technical lag gives domestic manufacturers a temporary advantage in offering native, fully functional AI tools to local consumers.
