New research suggests that when families at the same school agree to delay smartphone use, children report fewer mental health issues, though experts urge caution.

For many parents, keeping a smartphone out of their child’s hand feels like an uphill battle against social pressure. A new study from the UK suggests that this struggle might be less isolating if neighbors and classmates adopt the same stance. The research indicates that when a significant portion of a school community agrees to delay smartphone ownership, the reported mental health needs of students decrease.

The findings come from a working paper published by the Institute for Fiscal Studies, which analyzed data from English primary schools. While the results are promising, they highlight a crucial distinction: the study measures collective intent rather than individual screen time, reminding families that shared norms may matter as much as the device itself.

Shared Norms Reduce Reported Needs

The study focused on the “Smartphone Free Childhood” Parent Pact, a voluntary agreement where families promise not to give their children smartphones before age 14 or social media access before age 16. Gregory F. Veramendi, an economist at Royal Holloway, University of London, analyzed 329 schools where at least 20% of families had signed this pledge by mid-2026. He compared these schools with similar institutions where fewer than 5% of families participated.

The data showed a clear trend. In schools with high participation, the number of students recorded as having social, emotional, and mental health needs dropped by approximately 8% compared to the projected baseline. Additionally, independent records from the Department for Work and Pensions showed a roughly 6% decrease in child psychiatric disability claims in these communities. The reduction was most pronounced among younger children who had not yet owned phones before the pact began.

Promising But Not Definitive Proof

Despite the encouraging numbers, experts emphasize that correlation does not equal causation. Candice Odgers, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Irvine, noted that signing a pledge records parental intention but does not verify that children actually reduced their screen time. The study also has a limited two-year window and does not track individual usage habits, meaning the results should be viewed as a strong association rather than a guaranteed outcome.

This collective approach can reduce the anxiety and social friction that often accompany early smartphone adoption.

Wider research supports the need for caution. A review by King’s College London found that while problematic smartphone use is linked to anxiety, poor sleep, and lower educational outcomes, the evidence shows association rather than direct cause. For families, the practical takeaway is not to find a magic birthday to withhold a phone, but to consider the community context. Choosing patience together allows children more room for face-to-face interaction, play, and rest before digital demands take over their daily lives.
