ESR Releases Foldable iPhone Cases with Built-In Stands

As Apple prepares to launch its first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, accessory maker ESR has rolled out a corresponding lineup of cases and chargers. The company is positioning these products to address the specific design challenges of a folding device, particularly the need for protection without adding excessive bulk to the hinge area.

According to 9to5Mac, the flagship item in this collection is the Atelier Vegan Leather Magnetic Case. It features a built-in stand that rotates to hold the phone at various angles. ESR claims the case is designed to maintain a premium appearance over time, using materials that resist stains and wear from daily pocket use.

Solving the foldable hinge protection problem

Creating a protective case for a folding phone is mechanically difficult. Manufacturers must shield both screens and the central hinge while keeping the device thin enough to justify the purchase of a foldable model. ESR addresses this by using a high-strength zinc alloy for the internal stand mechanism. This material is tested to withstand 3,000 open and close cycles without deforming, ensuring the stand remains stable whether the phone is fully extended or folded shut.

The case also includes specific reinforcements for the hinge area and a soft microfiber lining to protect the inner screens. The exterior uses organic silicone leather with an anti-fouling coating. The stand on these models adjusts between 15 and 69 degrees, catering to different viewing angles. The primary difference is the lack of a hinge mechanism, which simplifies the internal structure but leaves the core material and magnetic specifications largely unchanged.

ESR emphasizes the longevity of the materials used in this lineup. The vegan leather is treated to resist stains from coffee, oil, and other common daily substances. This focus on stain resistance is a direct response to consumer complaints about light-colored cases picking up permanent marks.
