Foldable Phone Sales Surge in Europe as Samsung Reports Growth

Sales of Samsung’s latest foldable devices have jumped by half in Europe, signaling that the once-niche form factor is now competing directly with traditional smartphones.
Samsung Electronics has reported a 50% increase in combined sales for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra across Europe compared to their predecessors. This growth marks a significant shift in the mobile market, as the foldable category moves from a novelty status to a mainstream option for many consumers.
The data indicates that this adoption is not just limited to existing Samsung loyalists. A substantial portion of buyers are switching from competing brands, suggesting that the latest hardware improvements have addressed previous concerns about durability and usability that have historically hindered wider acceptance.
Brand Switching Drives Recent Growth
According to data cited by GN technics/mobile, there has been a notable influx of users from Apple. Specifically, the number of iPhone owners switching to any of the new Galaxy Z devices rose by 60% year-on-year. This metric is tracked via Samsung’s Smart Switch tool, which monitors migration patterns between operating systems.
Furthermore, two in ten buyers of the Galaxy Z Flip8 are first-time foldable users coming from other brands. This suggests that the lower price point and compact design of the Flip series are acting as a gateway for users who were previously skeptical of the larger, more complex Fold models.
Diverse Needs Shape Device Selection
The company attributes this success to a diversified portfolio that caters to different user priorities. Some buyers value the large screen for productivity, while others prefer the compact size for portability. Samsung notes that eight generations of development have refined both the hardware reliability and the software experience to meet these distinct needs.
There is also a threefold increase in users moving from the smaller Flip series to the larger Fold8 models. This internal migration indicates that once users experience the benefits of foldable technology, many seek the enhanced screen real estate that the Fold devices offer for media consumption and multitasking.
Trade-Offs Remain for Buyers
Despite the sales figures, the transition to a foldable device is not without compromises. These phones typically command a higher price point than standard slab-style smartphones. Additionally, the hinge mechanism, while improved, remains a more complex physical component compared to a unibody glass-and-metal design, which some users still perceive as a potential weak point for long-term durability.
For consumers considering a switch, the decision often hinges on whether the flexibility and screen size justify the cost and the slightly different user experience. The recent sales data suggests that for a growing segment of the European market, the answer is increasingly yes.
