How Samsung shaved grams off the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra

Samsung’s latest foldable phones weigh significantly less than their predecessors, but achieving that lightness required a complex balancing act. The company had to remove material in one area to accommodate new, heavier components in another.
The original Galaxy Fold was a heavy device, weighing 276 grams. Its successor, the Z Fold2, was even heavier at 282 grams. By contrast, the new Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs just 201 grams. This dramatic reduction in mass marks a significant shift in how Samsung approaches foldable design. The goal was not merely to make the phone smaller, but to prove that a folding device could be lighter than a standard flagship smartphone.
According to GSMArena, the Z Fold7 already achieved this milestone by weighing 215 grams, slightly less than the Galaxy S25 Ultra. The new Z Fold8 Ultra maintains this 215-gram weight despite containing more powerful internal hardware. This consistency in weight, despite increased functionality, reveals the extent of the engineering effort required to keep the device slim and manageable for daily use.
Balancing new hardware against weight limits
The Z Fold8 Ultra includes a larger battery than its predecessor, expanding from 4,400mAh to 5,000mAh. This increase adds six grams to the device’s total mass. To offset this weight gain, engineers had to scrutinize the entire internal structure. They examined 270 different components and 180 types of auxiliary parts. The team removed 15 specific parts and slimmed down the remaining components to ensure the total weight did not exceed the target limit.
The trade-offs did not stop with the battery. The new model also features a larger graphite sheet for improved heat dissipation and a new 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. Each of these additions contributed extra mass. To compensate, Samsung had to find savings in other areas. Some of these reductions were incredibly precise, with weight changes measured in hundredths of a gram. These small adjustments, when summed across the entire device, allowed the phone to maintain its slender profile without sacrificing performance.
Engineering with ultra-thin titanium sheets
To achieve the necessary thinness, Samsung introduced a new design element called Flex Titanium. This involves a titanium sheet that supports the folding display. The material is extremely delicate, measuring only a few tens of micrometers in thickness. To put this in perspective, the sheet is roughly one-third the width of a human hair. Using such thin metal requires careful handling to prevent deformation during the manufacturing process.
Another component, a titanium plate, is just 0.2 millimeters thick. Working with materials this fine poses significant risks. Standard machining processes can easily bend or warp the metal, leading to defects. Samsung engineers had to rethink their production sequence to ensure the parts remained flat and reliable. This level of precision is necessary to create a phone that is both durable and thin, allowing the device to fold smoothly without adding bulk to the hinge or chassis.
The cost of extreme slimming
While the result is a lighter and thinner phone, the process reveals the diminishing returns in hardware design. Every gram saved requires a corresponding gain elsewhere. This means that adding new features, such as better cameras or larger batteries, demands a simultaneous reduction in other areas. Consumers benefit from a more portable device, but manufacturers face a complex puzzle of material science and component efficiency. The Z Fold8 series represents a peak in this optimization, where the physical limits of current materials are being carefully pushed to the edge.
