iOS 27 Launches Monday With Expanded AI Tools

Apple has officially set the release date for its next major iPhone operating system. iOS 27 is scheduled to launch on Monday, September 14, marking a significant shift in how users interact with their devices through artificial intelligence. The company has published the full release notes, detailing the new capabilities that will be available to the public.

The headline feature is a revamped Siri that promises to be more natural and capable. It can understand context, perform actions within apps, and even recognize what is on your screen. However, this upgrade is not universal. The most advanced AI features are limited to iPhone 15 Pro models and all iPhone 16 models and later, leaving older devices with a reduced set of tools.

Siri Gains Conversational Depth

The new Siri aims to move beyond simple command execution. It can now hold conversations, remember previous interactions, and draft text messages or emails in a style that mimics your personal writing habits. A dedicated Siri app allows you to revisit past chats, while a new feature in the Camera app lets you ask questions about objects in real-time, such as splitting a bill or identifying food ingredients.

There is a hardware catch to these expressive voice options. The most natural-sounding voices and customizable pacing rely on on-device processing that is only available on the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models and later. Users on other eligible devices will still get the conversational improvements but without the premium audio enhancements.

Creative Tools Expand in Photos

Apple has significantly upgraded the Photos app with generative AI tools. The Extend feature allows users to expand the borders of an image with realistic new content, which is useful for adjusting aspect ratios. The Clean Up tool has also improved, offering a High Quality mode for removing larger objects from a shot with greater precision.

These tools rely on local processing to maintain privacy, but they do consume more battery and storage space during use. While the results are generally high-quality, the generation of new image content can sometimes introduce slight inconsistencies in lighting or texture, a common trade-off with AI-based image editing.

Productivity Features Reach Daily Apps

Beyond photography, iOS 27 integrates AI into everyday productivity. Safari can now automatically organize tabs by topic and monitor web pages for changes like price drops. The Calendar app allows users to create events using simple natural language, automatically filling in details like time and location.
