iOS 27 Splits iPhone Features into Three Hardware Tiers
Apple’s upcoming update divides its smartphone lineup into three distinct capability levels, meaning many users will miss out on advanced AI tools despite having a relatively new device.
Apple is preparing to release iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, but the update will not treat all iPhones equally. According to reporting from GN technics/hardware (en-US), the company has structured the software into three distinct tiers based on the device's processing power. This approach means that even if you own a recent model, you may not access every new feature.
The baseline tier includes the iPhone 11 and later models, as well as the iPhone SE from the second generation onward. These devices will receive core improvements like the new Liquid Glass design and faster search. However, the more advanced artificial intelligence capabilities are restricted to newer hardware, creating a clear divide in functionality between older and newer devices.
Three tiers define your access
The second tier unlocks Apple Intelligence, which includes features like Image Playground and improved Siri. To use these, you need an iPhone 16 or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. The third and most restrictive tier is for high-end models like the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air. This group gets exclusive access to custom Siri voices and advanced on-device dictation.
This third tier is particularly significant because it extends to other Apple products as well. iPads with M4 chips, Macs with M3 processors, and the Apple Vision Pro with M5 chips also qualify for these top-level features. If you own an iPhone 16 Pro, you will have access to the middle tier but will miss out on the highest level of personalization and processing power.
Beyond the phone requirements
Several new features depend on other devices or services. For example, using Tap to Share with Apple Pay requires an iPhone 12 or newer, but it is not available in the European Economic Area. Similarly, home clip descriptions and AI search for videos require a home hub like a HomePod or Apple TV 4K, in addition to an Apple Intelligence-enabled phone.
Audio features also have specific hardware gates. Live Translation works only with certain AirPods models paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later. Additionally, some health and safety features, such as Live Rewind and Siri Recap, require an Apple Watch Series 12 or Ultra 4. These features are scheduled for a beta release later in 2026.
Regional and carrier limitations apply
Even with the right hardware, you may not access all features due to location or service provider rules. Siri AI will initially launch only in English, with other languages following in October. It is also not available in the European Union at launch, meaning many users in that region will be excluded from these AI tools.
There is also a carrier-specific restriction for iPhone Handoff. At launch, this feature will only work with T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany. This unusual requirement highlights how software updates are increasingly tied to external services and regional agreements, not just the device itself.
