iPhone 18 Pro adds physical aperture control for photographers

Apple introduces a mechanical variable aperture to the iPhone 18 Pro, offering a level of optical control previously reserved for dedicated cameras, though specific f-stop values remain undisclosed.
Apple has unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, marking a significant shift in mobile photography by introducing a physical variable aperture to the main camera. This mechanical feature allows the lens to adjust its opening size, a capability that was previously limited to computational simulation. According to reports from GN technics/mobile (en-US), this is the first iPhone to offer such hardware-based control, aiming to provide photographers with more direct influence over light intake and depth of field.
The new 48 MP Fusion Main camera uses a six-blade mechanism to change the aperture setting. While the system can operate automatically to optimize for lighting conditions, users can also manually select from four distinct positions within the Camera app. This physical adjustment changes how light hits the sensor before any software processing occurs, which is a fundamental difference from previous digital-only approaches.
Mechanical aperture changes optical physics
The primary benefit of this hardware addition is the ability to alter the physical interaction between light and the sensor. In traditional photography, aperture controls the amount of light entering the camera and influences the range of sharpness, known as depth of field. By moving from a fixed lens opening to a variable one, Apple allows for improved low-light performance and greater clarity in group shots where subjects are at varying distances.
However, there is a notable gap in the available specifications. Apple has not disclosed the specific f-stop values corresponding to the four manual settings. Without these numbers, photographers cannot immediately determine the precise range of control they have over exposure and background blur, leaving some uncertainty for professionals who rely on exact optical metrics for their workflow.
Expanded manual controls in camera app
Alongside the hardware changes, Apple is updating the native Camera application with a new interface called Pro controls. This customizable layout allows users to place frequently used settings closer at hand and introduces manual adjustments for shutter speed, white balance, and aperture. The inclusion of a histogram tool further aids in evaluating exposure, bringing the native app closer to the functionality found in dedicated professional cameras.
The company also claims that a new computational imaging pipeline works in tandem with the hardware to produce sharper images. Additionally, Photographic Styles have been expanded to include texture and grain controls, offering users more options to create specific visual looks directly within the device without needing third-party editing software.
New features for video and authenticity
The iPhone 18 Pro models also receive updates for video creators. Cinematic effects can now be applied post-production to footage shot at up to 60 frames per second, while time-lapse recording supports 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR. Audio processing has been refined to better isolate voice and music, enhancing the quality of recorded sound.
A new feature called Apple Reference Image aims to address concerns about image manipulation. When enabled, the camera records signed sensor data that is processed to create an unalterable reference copy. This acts as a digital negative, allowing users to verify if a photograph has been edited after capture. This feature is part of a broader push toward image authenticity, with support for third-party apps via new APIs in iOS 27.
