Apple’s largest iPhone battery has created a logistical hurdle for regulators, leading to a new software feature that temporarily restricts power capacity during transport.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts a significantly larger physical battery than its predecessors, a design choice that directly contributes to its extended battery life. However, this increase in size has created a compliance challenge for Apple and its logistics partners. According to reporting from 9to5Mac, the device now exceeds specific international shipping thresholds for lithium-ion cells, necessitating a new approach to how the phone is prepared for transit.

Most countries have regulations regarding products containing single-cell batteries with a capacity over 20 watt-hours (Wh). Because the iPhone 18 Pro Max exceeds this limit, Apple has implemented a firmware-based solution. The device is manufactured with a software cap that keeps the battery below the 20 Wh threshold during factory shipping. This restriction is lifted only when the user initially activates the phone, allowing the full charging capacity to become available.

New setting handles secondary transport

The shipping restrictions do not end with the initial delivery to the customer. The same rules apply when the device is sent for repairs, traded in, returned, or gifted to another person. To manage these scenarios, Apple has introduced a specific tool within the operating system. This feature ensures that the battery is brought back under the regulatory limit before the phone leaves the owner’s hands.

The new option is located in the Settings app under the General and Transfer or Reset sections. When selected, the tool actively discharges the battery until it falls below the 20 Wh mark. It then sets a charge limit to prevent the battery from rising above that threshold again. This process is designed to make the device safe for standard shipping methods that might otherwise reject high-capacity lithium batteries.

Discharge process takes variable time

Users should expect the device to become warmer than usual during this discharge process, a side effect Apple describes as expected behavior. The phone will cool down once it is ready for shipping. While the device can be used normally during this period, the duration of the process depends on the starting charge level. If the battery is fully charged, the discharge phase can take up to two hours.

Once the process is complete, the Settings app will display a status indicating the device is ready to ship. It is important to note that if a user chooses to erase the iPhone, they will no longer be able to use the device while the battery discharges. This trade-off ensures compliance with safety regulations but adds a step in the lifecycle of the phone, particularly for those selling or trading in their hardware.
