vivo X500 design shift brings new camera layout

The upcoming vivo X500 breaks from its predecessor with a distinct rear design and shared premium sensors, set for a late-September debut in China.
Vivo has officially unveiled the design of its standard X500 smartphone, marking a noticeable departure from the look of its previous generation. The device is scheduled to launch in China on September 21, following a recent teaser for the higher-end X500 Pro Max. This reveal provides the first clear look at how the base model will differ visually from the premium versions of the series.
According to reporting by GSMArena, the new design focuses on a significant rearrangement of the rear camera module. Unlike the X300, which featured a different arrangement, the X500 adopts a large circular camera housing positioned toward the left side of the back panel. This change suggests a strategic shift in how vivo handles its camera aesthetics for the mid-to-high-end segment.
Rear panel design changes
The most striking visual update is the introduction of a raised rectangular plateau that spans the width of the phone. This structure houses the entire camera setup, providing a tactile and visual distinction from the previous model. The LED flash is no longer integrated within the circular module but sits outside it, adding a layer of complexity to the layout.
This design choice ensures the X500 stands apart from the X500 Pro and X500 Pro Max, which feature their own unique styling cues. By differentiating the base model so clearly, vivo aims to offer distinct identity options for consumers, allowing the standard X500 to avoid looking like a scaled-down version of the flagship devices.
Shared sensors and color choices
Beyond aesthetics, vivo has confirmed that the base X500 will utilize the same main and telephoto sensors as the X300 Pro. This means the standard model will offer high-end photographic capabilities, narrowing the gap between the mid-range and flagship tiers. However, users should note that this sharing of components does not necessarily imply identical processing power or battery life, as other internal specifications may vary.
The device will be available in four distinct color options: black, light gray, light pink, and a fourth variant with a gradient finish. These choices aim to appeal to a broad demographic, offering both understated and vibrant options. The gradient finish, in particular, adds a modern touch that differentiates the phone from more traditional solid-color designs.
Launch timing and market positioning
With the launch date set for September 21 in China, the X500 enters a competitive market where design and camera performance are key differentiators. The decision to share sensors with a previous Pro model signals a strategy to offer premium features at a potentially lower price point. Consumers looking for a balance between cost and capability may find this model particularly attractive.
However, the trade-off for this shared hardware is a design that is distinctly different from the flagship Pro models. While this ensures clear product differentiation, it may also mean that the X500 lacks some of the exclusive design touches found in the higher-tier devices. Buyers should weigh the value of the shared sensors against the visual and functional differences when considering their purchase.
