Waymo Offers $2.85 Credit for Combining Robotaxi and Transit Rides

Waymo has expanded a pilot program that offers riders a $2.85 credit when they combine a public transit trip with a robotaxi ride. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between city transit networks and last-mile transportation needs.

However, the benefit is currently restricted to users paying with a Visa card. While Waymo intends to support other payment methods in the future, only Visa holders can access the reward at this time.

How the transit credit works

To qualify, riders must link their Visa card to the Waymo app and use the same card for both trips. The two rides must occur within a two-hour window of each other to trigger the reward.

Once the conditions are met, the $2.85 is added to the user's account as Waymo Cash. This virtual currency can then be applied toward future Waymo rides, effectively reducing the cost of the robotaxi service.

Origins and regional incentives

The program began as a trial in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In San Francisco, the credit amount was specifically chosen to match a local discount available to riders who use both BART and SF Muni systems.

By mirroring existing regional incentives, Waymo hopes to encourage a symbiotic relationship between its autonomous fleet and established public transit infrastructure. This approach seeks to make the combined journey more affordable than using either service alone.

Limited payment options remain

The primary catch for consumers is the exclusivity to Visa. According to Electrek, Waymo has not yet integrated other major payment processors into this specific reward scheme.

Although the company operates in 14 cities, the availability of public transit varies significantly by location. Riders in cities with robust transit networks will find this program more useful, while those in areas with limited options may see less benefit.
