Garmin has introduced the Cirqa, a fitness tracker that abandons the traditional screen entirely to focus on continuous health monitoring. By moving away from a display, the device aims to eliminate digital distractions while providing access to the company’s advanced sensor suite. It is designed for users who prefer a minimalist approach to tracking their physiological state without the constant ping of notifications.

The device relies on a soft, washable textile strap to house a compact sensor module. This design choice makes the tracker nearly invisible during sleep and daily activities, addressing a common complaint about the discomfort of standard wristbands. However, the lack of a screen means all data must be viewed through the Garmin Connect app on a smartphone, creating a dependency on a separate device for any immediate feedback.

A Focus on Continuous Health Metrics

According to GN auto tech/wearables, the Cirqa leverages Garmin’s Elevate Gen 4.1 optical heart rate sensor, the same technology found in their high-end Fenix series watches. This hardware allows for precise tracking of heart rate variability, skin temperature, and blood oxygen levels. The system translates these raw signals into actionable insights like Body Battery, training readiness, and stress levels, offering a comprehensive view of recovery without the need for frequent manual checks.

The trade-off for this depth of data is the absence of onboard GPS. The tracker must pair with a smartphone to determine location and speed during outdoor activities. While it supports over 80 sport profiles with automatic detection, users cannot view maps or pace data on the wrist. This design decision reinforces the device's identity as a passive health monitor rather than an active sports companion.

Comfort and Wearability Trade-Offs

In terms of physical comfort, the Cirqa is significantly lighter than many smartwatches, weighing approximately 23 grams including the strap. The fabric band is sweat-resistant and can be washed, which is a practical advantage for long-term wear. However, the module is wider than competitors like the Fitbit Air, which may feel bulky on narrower wrists. The Velcro closure ensures a secure fit, though changing the strap can be slightly fiddly due to the small attachment pins.

Battery Life and Charging Limitations

Garmin claims a battery life of up to ten days, though independent testing suggests realistic usage ranges between six and eight days depending on how frequently blood oxygen sensors are used. The device uses a proprietary charging cable rather than the now-standard USB-C, meaning users must keep a specific charger on hand. Additionally, while core features are free, advanced insights require a subscription to Garmin Connect+, adding a monthly cost of nine euros on top of the initial purchase price.
