A new screenless wearable combines standard health tracking with a built-in voice recorder, offering a privacy-focused alternative to smartwatches for users who want to capture ideas without constant screen notifications.
The PiLY is a screen-less wristband that tracks health stats and functions as a voice recorder. It monitors steps, heart rate, and sleep while allowing users to capture meetings or ideas without the distraction of phone notifications. The device is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter at a discounted price, though it is not yet available for immediate purchase.
Unlike traditional smartwatches, this tracker relies on a companion app for data processing and transcription. It supports 180 sports activities and uses your phone's GPS for outdoor routes. The primary trade-off is the lack of a display, meaning you must keep your phone nearby to view detailed metrics or manage recordings.
Voice recording without subscription fees
The standout feature is the ability to record audio directly from the wrist. A single button press starts the recording, which is then beamed to your phone for analysis. According to PiTeam, the company behind the device, there are no account requirements or subscription fees for this service. The app transcribes audio in over 120 languages and can generate structured notes or to-do lists from the raw audio.
Privacy is a key selling point, with the company promising that recordings are encrypted during transmission. They state that user data is not stored, shared, or used to train AI models. However, the device has 1 GB of internal storage that can hold up to 10 hours of audio, meaning data is temporarily kept on the hardware before being processed.
Hardware limits and battery life
The band features a stainless steel body with interchangeable nylon straps and weighs only 16 grams. It offers approximately two weeks of battery life on a full charge, which takes about an hour. The device is IP67 rated for water resistance, protecting it from rain and splashes, but it is not suitable for swimming due to the lack of full submersion protection.
Crowdfunding risks and delivery timeline
PiTeam is offering the tracker at US$99 during the campaign, down from an expected retail price of $199. While the brand has successfully shipped two previous hardware products, crowdfunding always carries inherent risks. Orders are scheduled to ship worldwide in February 2027, a significant wait time for backers. Delivery costs will be determined once the campaign concludes, so the final price may vary based on your location.
