A new Android XR device offers a hybrid experience between a full headset and standard smart glasses, launching this fall.

XREAL has moved its Project Aura from a concept to a near-final product, officially rebranding it as the Aura ahead of a launch this fall. While the device was initially announced as a tethered pair of lightweight glasses built on Android XR, the version recently demonstrated at IFA reveals a much more refined hardware and software package. Reservations are already open, and the company has clarified that the final experience will combine spatial computing features with a form factor significantly smaller than traditional headsets.

The core appeal of the Aura lies in its ability to deliver a spatial computing experience without the bulk of a full VR headset. It features floating windows, hand tracking, and apps anchored in physical space, all while weighing under 95 grams. This design philosophy aims to bridge the gap between immersive headsets and everyday wearables, offering users a device that feels closer to standard eyewear despite its advanced capabilities.

Hybrid design balances power and weight

To achieve this balance, XREAL has split the processing load between two distinct units. The glasses themselves house an X1S chip for spatial processing and display control, while the bulkier computation is handled by a separate 270-gram puck connected via a tether. This setup allows the glasses to remain lightweight enough for extended wear, with reports suggesting users can comfortably use them for up to 40 minutes. The combination of these chips is designed to keep latency under 3 milliseconds, which is critical for smooth interaction with virtual windows.

The visual experience relies on micro-OLED displays offering a 70-degree field of view at a 120Hz refresh rate. Two SLAM sensors handle depth and spatial tracking, while a 12MP camera captures the surrounding environment. Although the glasses include physical controls for volume and lens dimming, the primary interface remains gesture-based, with a dedicated button to summon the Gemini assistant. This integration of Android XR features into a glasses-like form factor represents a significant step toward making spatial computing a daily utility rather than a niche hobby.

Practical controls and prescription support

User interaction is designed to be intuitive, with physical buttons providing reliable alternatives to complex gestures. Holding the upper-left button activates the built-in AI assistant, while a separate red button controls lens dimming and workspace cleanup. XREAL has also included support for prescription lens inserts, a crucial feature for the majority of users who rely on corrective eyewear. This practical addition addresses a common barrier to adoption in the smart glasses market, making the device more accessible for everyday use.

Tethered setup limits full mobility

Despite the lightweight design, the Aura is not a standalone device. The tether to the processing puck is a necessary trade-off to keep the glasses slim and battery life manageable. This connection means users cannot move freely as they would with a fully self-contained headset, which may limit its utility in certain dynamic environments. However, for stationary or semi-mobile use cases, such as working with multiple virtual screens or watching media, this tethered approach offers a viable compromise between power and portability.

According to XDA Developers, the hands-on experience confirms that the device is close to its final form, though some software rough edges remain. The excitement surrounding the Aura stems from its ability to make spatial computing feel less like a specialized gadget and more like a natural extension of the user's visual field. As the launch date approaches, the focus will shift to how well the ecosystem of apps and services supports this new hardware paradigm.
