Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement, declared that the 2027 election will be a contest between the ruling All Progressives Congress and Nigerians. He made this statement on Tuesday in Katsina during a campaign event. According to Independent Newspaper Nigeria, he argued that the fight is not between specific political parties.
Makinde urged voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and participate in the process. He presented the APM's “Reset Nigeria” agenda, which targets the economy, education, and insecurity. The plan aims to build a system that works for all citizens regardless of tribe, religion, or region.
Dispute over airport funding claims
The Oyo State Governor also challenged claims made by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Wike stated that President Bola Tinubu gave N50 billion for the upgrade of Ibadan Airport. Makinde described this as false, asserting that the project is funded entirely by the Oyo State Government.
He emphasized that no such federal funds were provided for the upgrade. The airport project is being undertaken with state resources alone. This dispute highlights ongoing tensions between state and federal officials regarding infrastructure spending.
Security and constitutional duties
Makinde lamented the country's security situation, citing the recent killing of 37 young Nigerians in Niger State. He also criticized President Tinubu for failing to transmit power to Vice President Kashim Shettima while abroad. Makinde pledged to comply with Section 145 of the Constitution if elected.
His running mate, Lawal Musa Daura, echoed these concerns. Daura noted that insecurity and poverty are major challenges in the Northwest. He promised that the APM ticket would address these issues and restore normalcy across the country.
