Nearly two decades after international inspectors were expelled from the country, the outside world relies exclusively on satellite imagery and open-source intelligence to assess North Korea’s nuclear trajectory. In late 2026, this limited view reveals a program that is expanding visibly across multiple fronts. According to reports from the GN geopolitics/nuclear desk, the IAEA has documented the construction of a second uranium enrichment facility at the Yongbyon complex, marking a significant escalation in infrastructure development.
The agency identified the new two-story structure by cross-referencing commercial satellite images with state media photographs from a June 2026 visit by Kim Jong Un. These visuals reportedly showed centrifuge cascades resembling those found at known enrichment sites. This juxtaposition of dismantling older infrastructure while building new capacity suggests a deliberate modernization of the complex rather than mere maintenance.
Enrichment Capacity and Supply Constraints
North Korea’s declared enrichment infrastructure now spans at least two locations at Yongbyon and the Kangson facility outside Pyongyang. The annex at Kangson appears to have become operational around January 2026. Because clandestine centrifuge halls are relatively easy to conceal, nonproliferation researchers argue that tracking uranium supply is a more reliable method for bounding enrichment capacity than counting hidden buildings.

This suggests that supply is not the primary constraint on program growth.
