Kyiv Fuel Stations Targeted in New Wave of Russian Strikes
Two days of attacks on civilian infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital signal a potential shift in military strategy, prompting urgent calls for international sanctions.
Russian drone strikes hit two fuel stations in Kyiv early Friday, killing two people and injuring others, according to the city mayor. The attacks occurred within ten minutes of each other in the Obolonskyi and Dniprovskyi districts, marking the second consecutive day that Moscow has targeted fuel infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital.
This pattern suggests a deliberate campaign focused on civilian areas, as Ukrainian authorities have warned residents to avoid filling stations during air raids. While fuel stations near the front lines have been hit regularly, strikes on the capital represent a significant escalation in the conflict that began with Moscow's invasion in 2022.
Escalation in civilian infrastructure targeting
According to Al Jazeera English, the strikes are part of a broader effort to maximize casualties and spread fear among the Ukrainian population. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Russia is systematically attacking places where people conduct their daily lives, aiming to put pressure on society. He declared Friday a day of mourning for the victims of the latest attacks in Kyiv and other regions.
Other overnight strikes caused significant casualties elsewhere in Ukraine. A drone attack near a shopping mall in Pavlohrad left five people dead and 67 injured, while a strike on an apartment building in Zaporizhzhia injured a mother and son. Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians, but the frequency of attacks on energy and commercial sites has increased as the conflict evolves into daily missile and drone exchanges.
Ukraine responds with drone offensive
In response to the strikes, Ukraine launched a large-scale drone attack through the night. The Russian Ministry of Defence reported that its forces shot down 777 drones across 16 regions. Local authorities in Tula, south of Moscow, reported two deaths and three injuries resulting from the Ukrainian attacks, highlighting the reciprocal nature of the current phase of the war.
Calls for immediate international sanctions
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged the administration of US President Donald Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia immediately. Speaking at the Yalta European Strategy forum, Zelenskyy questioned why decisions are not being made more quickly. He also called for a truce covering strikes on energy targets, warning that Ukraine is prepared to strike back if Moscow attacks its energy grid over the winter.
The diplomatic pressure reflects a growing urgency in Kyiv to secure international support against what officials describe as systematic intimidation tactics. As the conflict continues, the focus on energy infrastructure remains a critical point of contention, with both sides emphasizing their right to defend against attacks on vital national resources.
