According to the Operational Command of the Armed Forces, aircraft took off around 7:00 a.m. local time in response to alerts regarding drone activity near the border. The operation concluded shortly after 8:00 a.m., with authorities confirming that the threat had been neutralized and normal air traffic resumed at the affected facilities.
Coordinated Response in Border Regions
The Polish Air Navigation Services Agency announced that Lublin and Rzeszow airports suspended operations for approximately 40 minutes during the military exercise. This pause allowed for the safe passage of aircraft and the assessment of the airspace situation. Concurrently, the Government Security Center issued public alerts for residents in the Lublin and Podkarpackie regions, advising them to remain cautious during the heightened security period.

This latest incident follows a series of Russian drone attacks on western Ukraine earlier in the week, which struck infrastructure near the Polish border. On September 13, drones hit a gas station close to the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing and a passenger train just two kilometers from the border. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski stated that the government is treating these strikes with the utmost seriousness, emphasizing the proximity to national territory.
Reports from Kyiv Independent and other outlets indicate that former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials were on a train near the crossing at the time of the attack, having passed through shortly before the incident. NATO General Secretary Mark Rutte characterized the strikes as a sign of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s desperation, noting the deliberate targeting of areas close to NATO territory.
