U.S. President Donald Trump asserted on September 18 that his son, Donald Trump Jr., has fully reimbursed Russian businessman Umar Kremlev for expenses related to their wedding celebrations. The President told reporters that upon learning of the financial arrangement, he inquired directly with his son, who confirmed the debt had been settled. According to Trump, this repayment occurred some time ago, and he believes the matter is now closed.
These remarks follow recent disclosures by the Kyiv Independent and other investigative outlets regarding significant payments made by Kremlev toward a May wedding in the Bahamas. The reported costs included the rental of a private island resort and a fireworks display. Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, previously acknowledged the arrangement, describing Kremlev as a friend who hosted the festivities as a personal gift while denying any political motivation behind the expenditure.
Kremlev’s ties to Moscow deepen
Kremlev has served as the head of the International Boxing Association since 2020 and maintains close connections with the Kremlin. Earlier this year, President Vladimir Putin awarded him Russia's Order of Friendship. The timing of these honors coincided with Kremlev’s travels to China as part of a Russian business delegation shortly before the wedding. Under his leadership, the IBA received substantial backing from Gazprom, a Russian state-owned energy company, although that sponsorship agreement expired at the end of 2022.
The International Olympic Committee withdrew its recognition of the IBA in 2023, citing long-standing disputes over governance and financial integrity. Additionally, Ukrainian authorities have placed sanctions on Kremlev, targeting various Russian figures for their support of Moscow following the start of the full-scale invasion.
