Syria has formally warned the United Nations Security Council that Israel poses the most significant threat to stability across the Middle East. According to reports from trtworld.com, Permanent Representative Ibrahim Olabi argued on Thursday that recent Israeli military actions constitute a danger not limited to Syrian borders but affecting the entire region.
The diplomatic confrontation follows a visit by Israeli leadership to Mount Hermon, which was condemned by 44 nations as a violation of international law. Damascus maintains that while it has engaged in good faith with US-sponsored security talks, these efforts have been met with aerial strikes and border incursions rather than diplomatic resolution.
Sovereignty Disputes and Military Presence
UN Deputy Special Envoy Claudio Cordone emphasized that violations of Syrian sovereignty must cease immediately. He noted that Israel’s military presence in southern Syria breaches the 1974 Disengagement Agreement through frequent incursions and checkpoints, particularly in the Quneitra and western Daraa areas.
Cordone stated that security concerns cannot be sustainably addressed through unilateral military action or an open-ended troop presence. He urged that tensions in regions like Suwayda be resolved by Syrians without disruptive foreign interference, aligning with a roadmap established in late 2025.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in North
Amidst these geopolitical tensions, UN humanitarian officials report severe economic pressure on the population. Tom Fletcher warned that shipping disruptions in key straits are driving up freight costs, leading to a sharp rise in diesel prices that threatens essential services like heating and water pumping.
The cost of living has escalated significantly, with food and education programs remaining underfunded. Aid agencies have been forced to reduce rations for vulnerable families as the minimum expenditure basket for basic goods continues to climb.
Recovery Halted by Ordnance Risks
Reconstruction efforts are further hampered by the widespread presence of explosive ordnance. Since late 2024, unexploded devices have caused significant casualties, including hundreds of children, and continue to block access to agricultural land necessary for economic recovery.
Fletcher described the situation as an inability to build an economy over a minefield, urging international donors to convene a dedicated conference for reconstruction and to support private-sector banking solutions to aid the returning displaced population.
