Analyst Urges End to Zcash Dev Fund

Winklevoss Capital analyst Maxime Desalle called for the complete elimination of the Zcash development fund. The proposal follows a token rally that pushed the fund's value above $95 million.
The Zcash development fund currently holds more than $95 million in value. This surge in asset value has intensified debates over the fund's future structure. Cointelegraph reports that industry figures are divided on the optimal path forward.
Maxime Desalle, an investment analyst at Winklevoss Capital, argued for the total removal of the fund. He stated that this action would resolve ongoing governance disputes. Desalle also warned that the fund may undermine network security.
Governance models face scrutiny
Haseeb Qureshi from Dragonfly rejected pure token holder voting for fund control. He proposed a hybrid model where holders elect temporary councils. This approach aims to balance decentralization with stability.
Huang agreed with the concern over unpredictability in pure holder governance. He suggested that such volatility could limit long-term trust in the asset. The proposed solution includes additional forms of governance beyond simple voting.
Fund mechanics and accumulation
The fund accrues 0.1875 ZEC tokens per block under the NU6 upgrade. This amount represents 12% of the total block subsidy. The balance remains outside circulation until governance approves disbursement.
Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox defended the Community Grants Committee on Sept. 1. He cited the committee as a primary reason for the network's growth. Wilcox clarified that the committee accounts for only 40% of the total fund.
Security concerns drive debate
Desalle argued in a Sept. 9 post that the fund creates bureaucratic dependencies. He compared these dependencies to those found in certain welfare states. The analyst believes these structures pose a risk to Zcash security.
The debate centers on the balance between funding development and preserving monetary integrity. Token holders now face a critical decision on the fund's trajectory. The outcome will shape the protocol's economic policy for years to come.
