Dogecoin leads crypto gains while Bitcoin holds above $85,600 after a major wave of forced short liquidations.

Key points

  • Dogecoin rose 15% to over 10 cents while Bitcoin held steady above $85,600.
  • $844 million in short positions were liquidated, forcing exchanges to buy assets automatically.
  • AMD briefly surpassed $1 trillion in market value as AI adoption drove tech stock gains.

Dogecoin surged 15% to just above 10 cents, leading the latest market rebound. Bitcoin stayed flat near $85,600 after rising 5% over the past 24 hours. The move was driven by forced buying from traders who lost their short positions.

Total crypto liquidations exceeded $1 billion in the last day. Short sellers accounted for $844 million of that total, representing 82% of all closed positions. Roughly 135,000 traders were forced out of their accounts during this period.

Short squeeze mechanics drive price action

Exchanges automatically buy assets when collateral fails to cover losses. This forced buying pushes prices higher and triggers more liquidations. Bitcoin accounted for $608 million of the total liquidations, while ether made up $181 million.

The largest single liquidation was a $21 million bitcoin position on Hyperliquid. Liquidation volume dropped to under $11 million in the final hour. Future price gains now depend on new buyers rather than forced selling.

AI optimism lifts Asian tech stocks

Asian equity markets advanced as enthusiasm for artificial intelligence spread. The MSCI Asia Pacific index rose nearly 1% for a fifth straight day. Chipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix led the gains in the region.

Meta Platforms' new AI agent, Muse, has become the top free app in the US. It passed 3 million installs and outperformed ChatGPT in early downloads. AMD briefly crossed $1 trillion in market value on this news flow.

Semiconductor leaders track AI adoption

Intel gained 12% and Arm rose 14% on Monday. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index advanced more than 4% in its fifth straight gain. Every query an AI agent processes requires significant server computing power.

Alibaba announced a new AI chip to compete with Nvidia. Its Hong Kong shares rose alongside Tencent, which released a new image model. CoinDesk data confirms the broad strength across digital assets and tech equities.
