MiCA Registered Banks Double in Three Months

The number of European banks registered under the MiCA framework rose from 40 to 80 in three months. German institutions led this expansion.
The number of European banks registered under the MiCA framework doubled in three months. The count rose from approximately 40 in late June to 80 by mid-September. This data comes from the European Securities and Markets Authority.
Total crypto-asset service providers increased from 243 to 349 during the same period. The share of banks within this total climbed from 17 percent to 23 percent. Non-bank providers saw their market share drop from 84 percent to 77 percent.
German Lenders Lead Registration Surge
German banks were the primary drivers of this growth. Deutsche Bank joined the register alongside Volksbank and Raiffeisenbank. VR Bank and other regional cooperative lenders also completed their registrations.
These institutions moved faster than non-bank firms. The banking sector added 40 new registrants. The non-bank sector added 106 new registrants over the same timeframe.
Regulatory Streamlining Under Article 60
Article 60 of the MiCA regulation allows banks to use a notification process. They do not need a separate CASP authorization. Credit institutions must submit information to national regulators 40 business days before offering services.
This framework lowers the barrier to entry for established lenders. It facilitates their integration into the digital asset market. The process is distinct from the full authorization required for non-bank entities.
Market Share Shifts Toward Banks
Banks now hold 23 percent of all registered entities. This is a six-percentage-point increase since June. The shift indicates a growing presence of traditional finance in crypto.
Cointelegraph reported on this trend on September 18. The analysis highlights the accelerating pace of adoption. The data reflects a significant change in the European digital asset landscape.
