Costco increased the price of its Kirkland Signature motor oil to $58, nearly doubling the cost from last year. The retailer also imposed strict purchase limits on high-demand synthetic oil products.

Costco raised the price of its Kirkland Signature full-synthetic motor oil 5-quart two-pack to $58. This represents a near-doubling of the approximately $30 price point observed last year. The retailer simultaneously restricted customers to purchasing two boxes per week. Mobil 1 full-synthetic motor oil 1-quart six-packs are priced at $44 with a limit of five packs per membership.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, stated that these limits are reasonable for individual vehicle owners. A standard car requires four to five quarts every 5,000 miles. The purchase caps primarily affect fleet managers rather than private consumers. The move reflects broader supply constraints driven by elevated crude oil prices.

Crude Prices Hit Multi-Month Highs

Brent crude oil prices exceeded $109 per barrel on Monday morning. This marks the highest level in months according to market data. Analysts cite geopolitical instability as the primary driver. Attacks on the East-West Crude Oil Pipeline in Saudi Arabia have disrupted supply chains. The pipeline is expected to remain offline for several weeks. Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries have further tightened global inventories.

Refined Product Costs Surge

National average gasoline prices reached $4.31 per gallon on September 14. This is significantly higher than the $3.17 average reported during the same period last year. Diesel prices set a new record at $6.23 per gallon on Monday. The national average for diesel was just under $3.70 per gallon at this time last year. Refined fuel costs track closely with crude oil market movements.

Retail Competitors Monitor Market Trends

Walmart, Amazon, and AutoZone have not yet announced similar price hikes or purchase limits. These retailers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Oil companies prioritize refining crude into diesel and gasoline over motor oil production. This strategic shift contributes to higher costs for lubricants in the retail market. The situation remains fluid as geopolitical tensions persist in the Middle East.
