The Indian Rupee is positioned near its annual low. A major bank predicts a modest recovery by late 2027. This rebound would remain below the start-of-year level.

The US Dollar to Indian Rupee exchange rate closed Friday at 95.99. This level sits barely above Crédit Agricole's year-end target of 96. The bank expects the Rupee to appreciate to 92 by September 2027. This represents a 4.2 percent strengthening from current levels. The forecast implies a partial reversal of recent losses. The Rupee has declined 6.68 percent against the Dollar since early 2026.

Crédit Agricole projects the Reserve Bank of India will raise the repo rate to 5.50 percent by December. The rate is expected to reach 5.75 percent from March 2027. This tightening aims to support domestic currency value. However, the Federal Reserve increased its rate to 3.75-4.00 percent on Wednesday. This move provides competing support for the US Dollar. Persistent portfolio flows favor US assets due to economic outperformance.

Oil Prices Complicate Recovery Path

India remains a net importer of crude oil. Brent crude prices reached 107 dollars per barrel in mid-September. This spike creates a terms-of-trade shock for the Indian economy. The bank notes that backwardation in oil markets suggests temporary escalation. However, sustained high prices would hinder Rupee recovery. Higher import costs increase pressure on the current account. This factor works against the benefit of higher domestic interest rates.

Dollar Strength Persists Across Markets

The Dollar has gained ground against major Asian currencies. The US economic outlook remains stronger than Europe and other Asian peers. This disparity drives continued capital inflows into US assets. The Rupee opened 2026 near 89.98. Even at the forecast 92 level, the Rupee would be weaker than at the start of the year. The recovery would only erase part of this year's depreciation. The US Dollar retains structural support from global portfolio flows.

Bank Forecasts Reflect Balanced Risks

Crédit Agricole sees the Rupee stabilizing above 92 by year-end 2027. The bank expects rates to rise before falling. This policy mix aims to balance inflation and growth. The forecast acknowledges the difficulty of reversing Dollar strength. The Rupee remains vulnerable to external shocks. The outlook depends on oil price stability. The bank's view aligns with broader market sentiment. The source Exchange Rates UK monitors these cross-currency dynamics closely.
