Senators Trade Captain to Florida for Three First-Round Picks

Ottawa Senators owner Michael Andlauer watched his team’s captain walk away. The club traded Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers this off-season. In return, Ottawa secured four draft picks, three of which are first-rounders.

The move closes a loud, physical chapter. Tkachuk spent eight years leading the Senators. His final season ended in a sweep by the Carolina Hurricanes. Rumors swirled in late April, but the deal was sealed only when the roster shuffle began.

Andlauer believes family ties outweighed team loyalty. He noted that Tkachuk’s father and brother influenced his choice. "Blood is thicker than water," Andlauer said, referencing the player's close bond with his brother Matthew.

The brothers reunited on the ice at the 2026 Olympics in Italy. They helped the U.S. team defeat Canada for the gold medal. Despite this, Tkachuk claimed the trade was not about playing alongside his sibling.

A record-breaking tenure in Ottawa

Tkachuk left as a statistical titan. He holds club records for goals, points, shots, and hits. Over eight seasons, he scored 213 goals and accumulated 463 points. He also led the team with 1,921 hits.

He served as captain for the last five of those years. Andlauer praised his leadership and community impact. The owner highlighted Tkachuk’s work with local youth organizations, calling him an exemplary role model.

New core signals a winning future

Ottawa moved quickly to replace the lost star. The Senators signed Drake Batherson to an eight-year extension. It is the largest contract in the franchise’s history. Andlauer sees this as a strong signal to fans.

The owner wants to erase fears of another mass exodus. He pointed to Batherson’s nine-year tenure as proof of loyalty. "We want to win," Andlauer stated, citing the excitement he sees in the current training camp.
