San Diego's Rally Fades in Four-Set Loss to Oregon
A surge to tie the third set evaporated in three rallies, leaving the Toreros short against No. 24 Oregon in Tempe.
The arena air in Tempe hung heavy with the dust of eighty-four swings. San Diego clawed back from an eight-point hole, the net vibrating with every contact, until the scoreboard read 24-24. Then the momentum snapped. Oregon’s blockers turned the ball back into San Diego’s hands three times in a row. The set died 27-25, and with it, the match ended 3-1.
It was a rare bright spot for the Toreros (3-5) in a four-set loss to the Ducks (7-1) at Desert Financial Arena. The team hit .186 for the evening, out-blocking Oregon 11.0 to 10.0. But the Ducks answered with 56 kills and seven aces, a firepower that overwhelmed San Diego’s defense in the final two frames.
A Surge That Nearly Held
The third set looked dead at 20-12. Then BayLea Sparks put the ball away. Kylie Munday took the service line and never left. San Diego scored eight straight points, the floor echoing with the thud of balls driven into the wood. Nemo Beach killed two swings, the block returned Vaulet and Crownover, and Munday served an ace to tie the score.
Oregon pushed ahead 23-20, but San Diego answered again. Sjakkie Donkers swung long, giving the Toreros the lead. The Ducks won the last three rallies, all on San Diego attack errors. Two were blocked. The set was gone, and the match followed.
Opening Control, Closing Collapse
The first set belonged to San Diego. The Toreros scored five straight to lead 13-3, hitting .320 with 11 kills and three errors. Oregon was held to .056. Meghan Scholz went 3-for-3 at the net and added four block assists. The Toreros controlled the sideout, the rhythm, the tempo.
Oregon found its offense after that and never lost it. The Ducks hit .297 in the second set behind eight Donkers kills. They pulled away from a 12-12 tie with a 4-0 run. In the fourth, they closed the match hitting .405 with 18 kills against three errors. San Diego did not record a block in the final set.
Individual Efforts in a Team Deficit
Kierstyn Barton led the Toreros with 15 kills and 10 digs. Beach finished with 11 kills on .310 hitting, nine digs and four total blocks, including both of San Diego’s solo stuffs. Munday ran the offense to 35 assists and 10 digs. Lauren Lynch posted a match-high 17 digs while passing 20 balls with one reception error.
Scholz led all Toreros with six total blocks to go with eight kills and a .316 clip. Sparks hit .400 with five kills and three block assists. The match took 2 hours, 12 minutes in front of 167 fans. San Diego finished the Snyder-Park Classic 1-2 after a five-set win over UC Davis and a four-set loss to No. 7 Arizona State. The next test arrives Thursday at Jenny Craig Pavilion against Arizona.
