American Public Education delivered a strong second quarter, with adjusted earnings per share of 52 cents significantly exceeding the consensus estimate of 36 cents.

American Public Education (APEI) reported second-quarter adjusted earnings of 52 cents per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 36 cents by 44.4%. The result marked a sharp reversal from a loss of two cents in the same quarter last year. Total revenues rose 5.5% year over year to $171.7 million, slightly exceeding the consensus mark of $171 million. Growth was driven by increased enrollment in the Health+ segment and higher net course registrations in the Military+ division, partially offset by the absence of revenue from the GSUSA business sold in July 2025.

Shares of APEI have declined by approximately 0.8% in the month following the earnings release, underperforming the broader S&P 500 index. Despite this recent stock price movement, the underlying financial results indicate improved operational efficiency and profitability. The company’s ability to maintain enrollment growth while expanding margins suggests a solid foundation for future performance, even as the stock navigates post-earnings volatility.

Military and Health Segments Drive Profit

The Military+ segment generated $85.5 million in revenue, a 4.7% year-over-year increase, supported by a 2% rise in net course registrations to approximately 98,300. Operating income for this segment grew 10.6% to $23.7 million, with the operating margin expanding to 27.7% from 26.2%. This improvement was aided by higher revenues and a $0.8 million reduction in employee compensation costs, which helped offset a $2 million increase in advertising expenses.

Simultaneously, the Health+ segment extended its growth trajectory, with revenues advancing 11% year over year to $86.2 million. This increase reflected 9.2% growth in on-ground enrollment and 3.4% growth in online enrollment, alongside tuition adjustments implemented in late 2025. The segment posted an operating income of $0.3 million, a significant improvement from a loss of $2.4 million in the prior-year quarter, as the operating margin improved to 0.4% from negative 3.1%.

Margin Expansion and Liquidity Position

Adjusted EBITDA increased 36.8% year over year to $20.7 million, with the margin expanding 275 basis points to 12% from 9.3%. Total costs and expenses rose modestly by 1.6% to $158.2 million. While selling and promotional expenses increased 14.5% due to higher advertising spending, instructional costs declined 2.3% to $76.6 million. The overall operating margin improved to 7.9% from 4.3% in the previous year, reflecting better cost control and revenue growth.

Liquidity strengthened considerably, with cash, cash equivalents, restricted cash, and short-term investments totaling $222.8 million at the end of June 2026, up 26.2% from year-end 2025 levels. Total debt stood at $88.9 million, leaving the company with $133.9 million in excess cash and short-term investments. Net cash provided by operating activities for the first half of 2026 was $75.4 million, compared with $51.8 million a year earlier, driven largely by the collection of delayed Military+ tuition assistance receivables. APEI also repurchased 70,365 shares during the quarter, with $45.0 million remaining under its buyback authorization.

Forward Guidance Signals Continued Growth

For the third quarter of 2026, management projects revenues between $164.5 million and $167.0 million, compared with $163.2 million in the same period last year. Earnings per share are expected to range from 18 to 29 cents, while adjusted EBITDA is forecasted between $14.0 million and $17.0 million. Enrollment expectations remain stable, with Military+ registrations projected at 101,000 to 103,000 and Health+ enrollment at 19,100 students. This guidance, sourced from GN markets earnings data, indicates continued momentum in both core business segments.
