Berkshire Hathaway Buys $212M Lennar Stake Amid Housing Slump

Berkshire Hathaway added $212 million to its Lennar position as the homebuilder's Q3 earnings fell and it cut its 2026 delivery outlook.
Key points
- Berkshire Hathaway bought $212.4 million in Lennar stock, increasing its total stake to approximately $1.2 billion.
- Lennar's Q3 net earnings fell to $284 million from $591 million a year earlier as new orders dropped 9%.
- The company lowered its 2026 delivery outlook to 80,000-81,000 homes from the prior estimate of 82,000-83,000.
Berkshire Hathaway disclosed a $212.4 million purchase of Lennar shares over three trading sessions in September, adding to an existing position valued at approximately $1.2 billion. According to an exchange filing cited by Yahoo Finance, the conglomerate acquired 2.74 million shares of both Class A and Class B stock during the period.
The investment occurs while Lennar shares face sustained downward pressure, having declined 22.8% year to date. Following the disclosure, LEN stock rose 2.1% on Monday and gained a further 1.2% in overnight trading, bucking the recent negative trend.
Quarter Results Reflect Margin Pressure
Lennar reported third-quarter net earnings of $284 million, a sharp drop from $591 million in the same period last year. The decline was driven by a contraction in new orders, which fell 9% to 20,879 homes, and a 3% decrease in deliveries to 20,840 units.
Gross margins compressed to 15.8% from 17.5% as the company deployed pricing incentives to support demand in a market constrained by elevated mortgage rates and reduced affordability. These operational headwinds directly impacted the profitability of the quarter's reported figures.
Delivery Outlook Lowered For 2026
Citing continued market weakness, Lennar reduced its full-year 2026 delivery guidance to a range of 80,000 to 81,000 homes. This marks a downward revision from the previous outlook of 82,000 to 83,000 units, reflecting the company's assessment of persistent demand challenges.
Berkshire Expands Homebuilder Exposure
The Lennar purchase extends Berkshire's strategic bet on the U.S. housing sector, where it also holds positions in D.R. Horton. The conglomerate completed its $6.8 billion acquisition of Taylor Morrison in July, further consolidating its footprint in the residential construction industry.
