DTE Energy is positioning itself as a key supplier for AI data centers in Michigan. The company has secured a major power agreement with Google. This move comes as natural gas demand surges due to AI infrastructure needs.
According to CMC Markets, the natural gas sector faces a structural shift. Data centers are driving unprecedented consumption. This growth is straining supply chains and raising prices for traditional users.
Gas Demand Surges for Data Centers
BloombergNEF forecasts a 15 billion cubic feet per day increase in gas use by 2035. This volume exceeds the current consumption of most countries. The surge is driven by the high power needs of AI servers.
Wood Mackenzie notes that cheap gas days are ending. Henry Hub prices are forecast to approach $5 per MMBtu by 2035. This represents a significant increase from the $2 to $4 range seen over the past decade.
DTE Energy Secures Major Contracts
DTE Energy has an approved contract with Oracle for a Michigan campus. It also agreed to supply 2.7GW to Google’s new facility. These deals help fund infrastructure upgrades for the utility.
The company seeks regulatory protections to manage costs. Large customers must pay upfront fees and collateral. This ensures that data center expansion does not burden existing residential customers.
Regulatory Risks for Utility Companies
Eversource has declined data center projects in New England. CEO Joseph Nolan cited concerns over rising electricity rates for households. The US House passed the Ratepayer Protection Act in September.
Political pressure is increasing over energy costs. Utilities must balance profit with affordable rates. This creates a complex environment for companies serving both residential and industrial clients.
