- M&T Bank raised its 2026 average loan guidance to $141B-$143B, targeting high-3.60% net interest margins.
- The bank expects fee revenues to reach the upper end of the $2.8B-$2.85B range, diversifying income sources.

M&T Bank Corporation raised its 2026 average loan guidance to a range of $141 billion to $143 billion, up from the previous target of $140 billion to $142 billion. This adjustment reflects sustained demand from middle-market and large corporate clients, which management believes will expand average earning assets and support interest income. The company projects taxable-equivalent net interest income will land in the lower half of the $7.2 billion to $7.35 billion range, with the net interest margin holding steady in the high-3.60% range.
Alongside loan expansion, M&T Bank expects fee-based revenues to approach the upper limit of its previously stated $2.8 billion to $2.85 billion growth target for 2026. These gains are driven by capital markets, wealth management, and mortgage placement activities. By generating fees without retaining all originated loans, the bank aims to improve capital efficiency and reduce reliance on spread income, creating a more diversified revenue base.
AI Adoption Targets Operational Efficiency
The bank is deploying artificial intelligence across credit underwriting, fraud detection, and cybersecurity to streamline operations. Management indicated that these automation efforts are designed to contain costs and strengthen operating leverage over time. While loan growth and fee revenues drive near-term earnings, AI-driven efficiencies are positioned as a long-term growth lever, contributing to projected earnings increases of 13.1% in 2026 and 9.5% in 2027.
Peer Banks Target Strong Revenue Growth
Competitors are also projecting significant revenue gains for 2026. PNC Financial expects net interest income to rise 15% to 15.5% from a 2025 baseline of $14.4 billion, with total revenues increasing 14% to $23.1 billion. Citizens Financial anticipates net interest income growth at the high end of a 10% to 12% range from its 2025 figure of $5.8 billion, alongside average loan growth of 3% to 5% from $142.7 billion.
Stock Lags Industry Performance
Despite these operational improvements, M&T Bank shares have gained 14.3% over the past year, underperforming the industry’s 23.8% growth rate. According to reporting by The Globe and Mail, the company currently carries a neutral rating, reflecting a market view that weighs the steady earnings trajectory against broader sector momentum. The divergence highlights differing investor assessments of the bank’s leverage opportunities compared to peers.
