AeroVironment's stock rose 5.7% after securing a data infrastructure deal, following a quarter where record backlog offset a slight EBITDA guidance miss.

AeroVironment (NASDAQ:AVAV) shares climbed 5.7% in afternoon trading on September 14, 2026, after the company announced a strategic partnership with Nominal. The aerospace and defense firm will implement Nominal’s data platform to centralize engineering test capture, cross-team reviews, and manufacturing traceability. This integration is designed to support accelerated test and production cycles for the company’s uncrewed aircraft and counter-UAS systems, directly linking digital infrastructure to hardware output across multiple defense programs.

The market’s reaction appears measured relative to the company’s recent volatility. GN stocks/nasdaq noted that AeroVironment has experienced 63 intraday moves exceeding 5% over the past year. The current price action suggests investors view the Nominal collaboration as a meaningful operational improvement rather than a fundamental shift in the business model. This sentiment builds on a strong quarterly performance reported earlier in the month, where the company demonstrated significant operational leverage despite a negative GAAP operating margin.

Quarterly Revenue Beats Consensus

AeroVironment delivered a record second-quarter revenue of $480.5 million, surpassing the analyst consensus of $457.6 million by approximately 5%. This 5.7% year-over-year growth was driven by a surge in demand, resulting in bookings of $0.7 billion and a book-to-bill ratio of 1.4. The strong top-line performance expanded the company’s funded backlog to a record $1.5 billion, marking a 37% increase compared to the prior year period.

Profitability metrics showed marked improvement, with adjusted EBITDA reaching $53.4 million, or an 11.1% margin, which exceeded estimates by nearly 37%. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $0.59, more than double the $0.25 consensus. While GAAP operating margins remained negative at -2.3%, this represents a substantial recovery from -15.2% in the same quarter last year. Cash burn also narrowed significantly, with free cash flow improving to negative $35.95 million from negative $146.5 million a year ago.

Management Reiterates Full Year Targets

Despite the strong quarterly results, management maintained its full-year guidance, projecting revenue of $2.18 billion and adjusted EPS of $3.18 at the midpoints. The full-year EBITDA guidance midpoint of $315 million landed slightly below the $318.2 million consensus, a minor divergence that did not dampen the positive sentiment generated by the expanding backlog and operational efficiency gains. The company continues to focus on mission-critical hardware production, leveraging the new data infrastructure to streamline its development pipeline.

Stock Remains Well Below Highs

AeroVironment shares are currently trading at $154.84, down 39.6% since the beginning of the year. The stock sits 62.2% below its 52-week high of $409.83 recorded in October 2025. Long-term investors have seen moderate growth, with a $1,000 investment from five years ago now valued at approximately $1,741. The company’s strategy to unify test data and accelerate production aims to sustain this growth trajectory within the defense sector.
