Barkly Rare Earths confirms high-grade rare earth intercepts across a 23km span, supporting its strategy to define a large-scale resource in the Northern Territory.

Barkly Rare Earths (ASX:BAK) has released initial assay results from its phase-one drilling program, confirming rare earth mineralization in every one of the 28 holes assayed. The intercepts span a lateral distance of up to 23 kilometers, with mineralization identified from as shallow as 9 meters downhole. The consistency of these results reinforces the company’s geological interpretation of a flat-lying, laterally extensive mineralized horizon within the Barkly Project in the Northern Territory.

Specific assay data highlights significant concentrations of total rare earth oxides (TREO). Hole BAK0133 returned an intercept of 2 meters at 2,716 ppm TREO from 11 meters, including a narrower interval of 0.5 meters at 6,064 ppm TREO. Similarly, hole BAK0080 yielded 1.5 meters at 3,228 ppm TREO from 15 meters, containing 0.5 meters at 5,170 ppm TREO. These figures align with the company’s existing inferred mineral resource of 40 million tonnes grading 2,100 ppm TREO, suggesting the new drilling is effectively extending known geology.

Magnet rare earths dominate composition

The chemical composition of the new intercepts remains consistent with previous resource estimates. Magnet rare earth oxides (MREO) account for 31% to 40% of the TREO in 27 of the 28 reported intercepts. This ratio closely matches the 34% MREO content of the company’s current inferred resource. Such consistency is critical for metallurgical planning, as MREO are the primary target for high-value separation. Additionally, the company notes that uranium and thorium concentrations remain low across the sampled intervals, a factor that simplifies processing flowsheets and reduces regulatory complexity.

Recent metallurgical testwork has demonstrated the efficiency of separating these valuable elements. The process achieved a 99% recovery rate for MREO into acid leach solutions, with 94% of yttrium reporting to the same streams. These results indicate that the mineralization is amenable to standard processing techniques, supporting the company’s technical case for commercial viability. The high recovery rates suggest that the geological quality of the ore is translating effectively into processable product streams.

Heavy rare earths and export dynamics

Three of the new intercepts returned elevated concentrations of yttrium, reaching up to 638 ppm. These intervals also contained heavy rare earth elements, including terbium at up to 17 ppm and dysprosium at up to 82 ppm. The presence of these specific elements is notable given the export control measures introduced by China in April 2025. While the overall grade is driven by TREO, the inclusion of heavy rare earths and yttrium adds a layer of strategic value to the resource, particularly in a market where supply chains for these specific elements are subject to geopolitical constraints.

Exploration targets and future drilling

Barkly Rare Earths is targeting an exploration resource of 200 to 1,000 million tonnes grading 1,600 to 1,900 ppm TREO. The current phase-one program has drilled 10,000 meters, with samples from 30 additional holes currently in laboratory processing. The company has already completed 68 holes in total and intends to drill more than 300 additional holes to further define the extent of the mineralization. The mineralization remains open in all directions, providing substantial upside potential for the resource estimate.

The company aims to produce an updated mineral resource estimate by the December quarter. Managing Director Craig Wright stated that the consistent results across such a wide area are satisfactory and justify the aggressive drilling campaign. The focus remains on defining a large-scale, high-grade resource that can support long-term production. The portfolio also includes the Buntine Project and a vanadium focus, diversifying the company’s asset base within the Northern Territory.
