Renewables Hit 5149 GW as AI and EVs Drive Grid Demand

Global renewable power capacity reached 5,149 gigawatts in 2025, marking a 15.5% annual increase according to the International Renewable Energy Agency. This expansion is fueled by immediate demand drivers such as artificial intelligence infrastructure, electric vehicle adoption, and rising electricity needs from extreme heat events. These factors are accelerating the shift toward low-cost, zero-carbon generation to meet unprecedented seasonal load pressures on electrical networks.
The rapid buildout of AI data centers requires vast amounts of continuous baseload electricity. A BloombergNEF report noted that Meta, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft accounted for 49% of all global corporate clean energy power purchase agreements signed. With data center power consumption projected to nearly double by 2030, renewable energy sources remain the primary scalable solution for meeting this fast-growing structural load.
Storage Investment Surges Past Hundred Billion
Achieving reliable renewable generation requires expanded energy storage capacity to mitigate weather-dependent output. Battery energy storage systems are essential for maintaining 24/7 grid stability by storing excess power and releasing it during peak hours. Annual global battery storage investment is expected to exceed $100 billion this year, establishing storage as the core catalyst for the clean energy rollout due to plummeting costs and superior cost-effectiveness over fossil fuel plants.
Bloom Energy Accelerates Data Center Supply
Bloom Energy specializes in solid oxide fuel cell technology, providing continuous low-carbon electricity for data centers and industrial use. The company has deployed over 1.5 gigawatts of low-carbon power across more than 1,200 installations globally. A landmark partnership with Oracle to deliver up to 2.8 gigawatts of fuel cell capacity reflects its rapid acceleration in response to growing AI-led power demand.
In August, Bloom Energy launched Power Connect, a new deployment system designed to reduce onsite power installation time by over 40%. This efficiency improvement aims to help customers bring new power capacity online faster, supporting the urgent need for scalable energy solutions in the technology sector.
